Description

Sixteen Sizes Smaller

Aimed at children aged 8+, but with a charming style that will appeal to younger children too, Sixteen Sizes Smaller is an adventure story with a difference. From the outset you are swept along right the heart of the action with our heroine Jessie as she leaps, crawls and fizzes her way through this very unusual day.

At the end of each chapter, it’s down to you to decide where or what Jessie does next. With 10 possible endings, you can read the book again and again, choosing different paths and discovering different fantastical worlds.

With its short chapters and interactive elements, this is a great book to encourage and engage reluctant readers. It’s a great book to read to younger children and enjoy making decisions together. And it’s a great book for confident readers to snuggle down and get lost in.

Sixteen Sizes Smaller by Ruth Pocock is a mid-grade children’s game book in the Choose Your Own Adventure-style, with a fresh and modern twist. The book begins with an introduction to the main character, an eight-year-old girl named Jessie Bellamy. Jessie is described as being just like everyone else, an ordinary girl with a pretty cool talent for handstands. One night she goes to bed in the ordinary way she and readers do every other night, except this time when she wakes up there is nothing at all ordinary about Jessie and her life. From here, readers determine the steps Jessie takes to get her extraordinary new life back to the ordinary.

It has been a long time since I had the opportunity to make choices for a character, but this is the first time my youngest reader got to do this. She absolutely loved Sixteen Sizes Smaller and it was a huge battle to get her to sleep after so, thanks for that to Ruth Pocock. I’m kidding, sort of. As I used to do, she wanted to see all of the different ways Jessie could advance in the story – and she wanted to see it all right then and there. The book is really well written and contains cute Silverstein-esque sketched illustrations of Jessie and the adventure she is on. However, it wasn’t until the next morning when I woke to find my daughter awake and reading on her own that I realized I might be able to forgive Pocock for the night before, and I could definitely recommend her book to others.
